I also posted the news in the Carver thread, but maybe that wasn't the right place to put it.
Anyway, yeah, it's unsurprising, but does open up a possibility for SPN. Though normally once these people move on, they move on. However - and someone correct me if I'm wrong - when I was still paying attention to things like credits, or episodes in general, I always noticed that Carver was still listed in the end credits as an exec producer, or producer, one of those. Is that still true? I always thought that was a little odd, seeing as he was showrunning Frequency, and was probably unofficially gone most of season 11 too. But certainly for season 12 he shouldn't have still been attached to the show, but he was, or is if anyone here recalls the latest credits.
That made me think that Carver had a deal with the network or studio or both for the chance to return to the show if the CW didn't go forward with Frequency. And, too, maybe that's why Dabb was listed as second under Singer instead of being the primary showrunner.
So who knows?

Yeah, I saw it after I posted this thread here. It's a kind of spoiler, but not so much that it needs to be removed from the other thread.
Carver is an odd case. There is, in fact, a title for former EPs who were head writers and have left the show - Executive Consultant. Kripke, for example, is listed as an EC. And there are other production-side Executive Producers on this show who have not been actually running the show in the story sense. For example, McG was an EP for quite a while, but never actually did much (if anything) with the show. Phil Sgriccia has been an EP for a long time, but his influence has been on the production side and directing.
But Executive Producers who were also writers were showrunners or at least running the writers room. It looks as though this season, Dabb has been the writer showrunner, while the Nepotism Duo have been running the writers room - with predictably horrible results.
These people are always listed as ECs after they leave, except for Carver, who has spent most of the season listed in the opening credits as an EP, still. And he is also the only writer to leave and then come back years later.
I really don't know what that says about his current status or whether he could come back, but I'm hopeful that his excellent record with the show's ratings would encourage the network to try to lure him back.

Jeremy! Baby! I've seen Dabb's suck and it's made me like you more. I doubt he comes back but dare to dream and take whatever not Dabb person they may find... not the nepotism duo or Perez...

Can Kripke poach Dabb, Nep Duo, Perez and Singer? Please? I will even watch his show if he does!

He may be upset, but I doubt he's surprised. Don't really see a costly show like that getting another home, but you never know.
