Dean knew something was up with Mary. He knew something was up with Crowley. And he didn't beat around the bush with Gavin. Plus, when Mary 'fessed up, he did listen. Go Dean. If Sam Smith is not tweeting on the show because fans on Twitter are hostile, that's on those fans. Hating the actress for crappy writing she can't change is immature. Come on, people. My big problem with that storyline is that Retch and the LoL suck so hard and are pretty incompetent.
Yeah, I thought Dean showing his impressively acute instincts was one of a few great parts about the episode.
It's a shame if they are being hostile to Sam Smith for their displeasure and hatred of Mary. SMH
BTW love your nick for Mr. Ketch...Retch

There's a lot of hate for Mary, not so much for Sam Smith.

The episode was a mixed bag for me. There was a lot of plate spinning and this and the last episode seem to be kind of set up episodes.
I do think Mary came off better this week. She said she loved Dean over the phone and finally told the truth about working for the BoL. That goes a long way for me. Still hate the ray guns though.
Other than that, there wasn't much time to give to each story. Mary/Ketch, Kelly/Dagon, Crowley's family. That was a lot to unpack.
I appreciate that they tried to fix the Gavin paradox and my head canon decided that the spell shielded Sam and Dean's memory.
Overall very eh....

Just watched it and like others have said – pretty boring, I caught myself several times looking away as I had lost interest. That whole first scene with Crowley and Lucifer was written in such a clunky way that I actually cringed for Mark Shepherd having to deliver something out of such drivel. I absolutely loath the Mary part now, (sorry to those who still have time for her!) was on the fence about her coming back but I almost hate her now which is ridiculous for a TV character!! It seems to me that Dean is the most divorced from Mary at the moment in the sense that he is more wary about her, Sam is being written to be going out of his way to be empathetic with Mary and wants to believe that she is his “Mom” in waiting. Hope they – Sam and Dean – latch on soon to how bad the BMOL are, I really don't want that to be strung out any longer. Hope also that Mary goes to Britain with the BMOL and carries on hunting there!! But I guess we are going to get lots of angst for S/D with Mary in the middle somehow, whether it be pitching them on different sides of is Mom good or bad, and she needs another chance or one agreeing to work with her and the BMOL or some other way to cause angst amongst the “family” can't wait NOT. Another things I really, really, really (and more really's) hate are the Weapons – I think the writers have made a HUGE mistake with this taking us back to the deus ex machina scenario.

I think Mary's intro was a totally random thing at the end of last season, but that it accomplishes some important things this season.
1. Sam can now just be Sam and not Raging assbutt Dean-Hating Sam simply for reasons of plot, because someone else in the family is making the dumb decisions to jump into the fire this season. And with Mary feeling so detached, she has a better reason for sort of going along with the LoL for a while than Sam, anyway. Nice to see Sam doing different stuff.
2. Dean has an actual relationship with his mom. I agree with the idea that this helps his self-esteem by taking Mary off a pedestal while not actually making her a horribly abusive parent.
I disagree with the idea that Sam is closer to her. Sam has been keeping her at arm's length while pretending he's just giving her space. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not really developing a realistic relationship with his mother. Dean, on the other hand, has slowly and haltingly been developing something with his mother via texting and phone games. It's not as fast as he'd like. It's not the wonderful fantasy he's cherished for decades. But it's something and it's something real, however imperfect.
All that said, I'm totally over the sparkly weapon plot coupons and the Lucifer baby mama drama, and the LoL just need to go away. Whatever is working and not working this season, I think Dabb is an awful showrunner. Carver can return any time now.

I could never understand the hate towards Carver - especially from many of the Dean girls. Carver was the one who brought Dean into the storyline. I just rewatched some of the earlier seasons and while there definitely better writers then, the focus of the story was always on Sam. It was only with Carver that the focus shifted to Dean.
Did he have problems? Yes - but hardly on the lines of Kripke (sorry not a Krikpke fan here) or Gamble or Dabb or Singer.

Carver said some really crappy things about Dean during several interviews or Q&A sessions. Sometimes right in front of Jensen. Also, he was HORRIBLE with interviews and stuff.
But there was one major Carver hater on the board and she was just disgusting in her hate for him. I think aside from Carver not being good with promotion, he was the one that gave Dean good stories. It was Singer who kept screwing those stories over.

Yeah I remember the Carver hater And I agree about the crappy things that Carver said about Dean and he seemed to ignore Jensen most of the time. (esp Comic Con one year IIRC) I'm just saying that (speaking as a Dean girl) as a showrunner I would rather have someone who despite whatever he said about Dean or JA, was more fair to him storywise than someone like Singer who I think really does like Jensen and Jensen likes him - but keep screwing his stories over, cutting them short etc. But that's just my opinion. Will wait and see how the Dabb/Singer combo performs this season.

I just watched this and 12, and I am really, really disappointed in the writers (yeah, even in the Lemmings. And I don't expect nothing better than the racist truck from them).
Re: Carver... Personally I dislike him because all he did to "Bring Dean into the storyline" was more like teasing with something that COULD have been interesting and then making it all about Sam, again. Which has never sit well with me. In spanish I'd call it Darle a la gente atole con el dedo (Which according to my dictionary is "pulling our leg" but I think it's not quite the same sense), like giving us a small taste of something we'll never get.
Other than that... is it me or these two episodes were really Dean-lite becuase they were filming when Jensen's twins were born? Because man, even for the usual "we're focusing more on the guest stars so that J2 have more free time" scale we're having lately, these were very Dean-lite.

I know Mary was supposed to have come clean but we never heard her tell Dean and Sam that the Colt was back--which, unless I'm not remembering it right, she still has. That might be something they would like to know.
of course, it's useless against Luci. But...maybe Little Nicky?
