I can't shake the feeling that J2 are slowly taking a deliberate backseat in the show.
Both of them expressed the desire to be inked up but never did because of the show and being an actor in general.
Now here we are currently filming episodes 9 and 10 and Jensen is getting a tattoo on his upperarm. Both of them have had multiple days off since filming began. Both of them have 3 young childeren at home. The twins will soon begin to walk.
I just have a feeling SPN will be on it's final seasons(s) I can't blame them with a showrunner who isn't even interested in the main characters. The story doesn't revolve about them anymore.
But somehow it feels different this year.

I doubt it will be this season, or even the next. Jared was talking about crossovers with the spin-off, which won't start before next season.
Jensen actually seems to be a bit more engaged this season, but it's possible they will give him a storyline that involves Dean, albeit not one that requires Dean being onscreen all the time. Like DeanMichael.
I'm wondering if Jared wants out more, though, since he seems to be filming significantly less than Jensen.

If I had to speculate it's figuring it how to do the least amount of work possible on the show. Life moves on and they've put in the years to do it. The problem is that Dabb sucks, they've spent years removing good supporting characters and the show started with a tiny main cast. Instead of building up the world to support them being there less they've generally shrunk it.
Logically, we have to be closing in on the end of Supernatural given how long it's been on. Will their reduced workload hasten that? Maybe, but we also get to see Dabb's "vision" play out and it's an old show.

Unless this show goes 26 seasons, it's obviously already over the halfway mark. But people have been speculating it was on its last legs since season four, so I just shrug and say it's impossible to say until someone makes an announcement. And with a spin-off coming up, and the network's love of crossovers, I just don't see how this show can logistically check out before the end of a complete season 14 (besides, they want that 300 episodes record).
It helps the network's decision considerably that SPN is still reliably in the top three on the network and is liable to end up in the top two very quickly if it holds up even a little and Riverdale tanks again (which Riverdale probably will, considering its pattern last season). They're just not going to let go of a show like that. I mean, if Grant Gustin decided he didn't want to do The Flash, anymore, they would either recast or bring in a new speedster. No way would they cancel the show. SPN's not going anywhere as long as it has ratings like that.
Now, there is a glitch with SPN in that it's a lot like X-Files where a major portion of the audience's investment in the story is actually in the main duo. So, they can't just replace Sam and Dean. There are things they can do with Sam and Dean, though, that make them still important while giving the actors less screentime, but we're only just seeing those things put into place and Dabb is...well, he's not very good at telling stories. So, even a good idea looks mediocre with him.

I think it'll safely get 15 seasons but after that I don't know, which I suppose is crazy to be saying about a TV show and confusingly vague wording before. Dabb + less J2 Is something I think could bring about that slide into ending, but I've said it was near the end before and here we are. The show will go down like the Titanic instead of the Hindenburg. Maybe Supernatural will see 26 seasons.

I think the network and studio heads cherish a hope that the show will go 21 seasons and break the L&O/Gunsmoke record. That would *really* put the CW on the map. But that goal is nine years away, so who even knows if it will happen? I remember telling people in season five and afterward on IMdB that the show's format was so evergreen it could easily go ten seasons and wouldn't it be cool if we got 13? I got laughed at then, but look where we are now.
With all the money it's making outside of live advertisement, and that it's the highest rated Netflix CW show (#4 on the Netflix list that came out in late May/early June), it could probably do a 0.0 and still get renewed until it broke the above record and the network/studio would *make* money, not lose it doing that. But it's not. It's second on the network in live viewing this week, which means they really can't cancel it. You just do not cancel your second-rated show, ever.
I do think J2 are the deciding factor here and that the network will do whatever it can to make them happy and keeping on keeping on. But it is possible the show might try to continue with just one J. Were I to hazard a guess, that J would be Jensen.
